Try a DIY Emu Oil Deep Repair Hair Mask
Posted by Dee Dee Mares on Jul 08, 2025
Treat your hair to a nutrient-rich, deeply moisturizing repair mask using simple ingredients from your kitchen. These natural ingredients contain powerful oils, vitamins, and proteins that help nourish dry, frizzy, or damaged hair — leaving it soft, strong, and shiny.
Powerful Ingredients for Healthy Hair
Here are some of the best natural ingredients to use:
Emu Oil
Emu oil has been shown to thicken the scalp and improve the size and health of hair follicles, which can stimulate both hair growth and melanogenesis (melanin production) — helping reduce premature graying. Rich in Omega fatty acids, it also works as a DHT inhibitor to reduce hair loss, deeply moisturizes the hair shaft, and enhances shine and manageability.
Avocado
Packed with proteins, amino acids, and vitamins, avocado soothes the scalp and supports healthy hair growth. It nourishes from root to tip and is especially helpful for dry or brittle strands.
Banana
Bananas improve hair manageability and shine, and help control dandruff. Rich in potassium, they strengthen and thicken fine or weak hair, making it less prone to breakage.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar helps restore the natural pH balance of the scalp, preserving the acid mantle that prevents moisture loss. This helps keep the scalp healthy and improves hair's overall condition and shine. Choose unfiltered, unpasteurized versions like Bragg's for maximum nutrients.
Eggs
Eggs are packed with protein, biotin, folate, and vitamins A and D — all of which are essential for strong, glossy hair. The nutrients in egg yolks closely match those found in naturally healthy hair.
Honey
A natural emollient, honey seals moisture into the hair, reduces breakage, and strengthens the hair shaft. Its antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties help combat dandruff, soothe irritated scalps, and protect against damage.
Mayonnaise
Mayonnaise combines egg yolks, vinegar, and oils that deeply condition and moisturize the hair. It also contains L-cysteine, an amino acid that promotes hair growth and scalp health.
My Favorite DIY Hair Mask Recipe
Ingredients:
-
2 tablespoons Emu Oil
-
2 tablespoons Mayonnaise
-
1 Egg Yolk
-
1 tablespoon Honey
-
1/3 Avocado
-
1/3 Banana
Vinegar After-Rinse:
-
2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
-
1 cup Water
Instructions:
-
Blend the Mask
Combine all the mask ingredients in a blender or food processor. If your honey is thick, warm it slightly in hot water or in the microwave for a few seconds before adding. Blend until smooth with no lumps. -
Prep the Vinegar Rinse
Mix the vinegar and water and set aside. If you're using raw apple cider vinegar, filter out the "mother" if desired. -
Apply the Mask
Massage the mask into your scalp and work it through your hair with your fingers. Cover your hair with a shower cap and leave the mask on for at least 20 minutes — or overnight for deeper conditioning. -
Rinse and Finish
Rinse thoroughly with cool water and a gentle shampoo. Follow with the vinegar rinse to remove any remaining residue and boost shine. Let the vinegar mix sit for 1–2 minutes, then rinse and condition as usual.
Enjoy your soft, silky, revitalized hair!
